Rules and Privileges

Some Saturdays in the school year the students from third year and above are allowed to visit Hogsmeade, the wizard village close to Hogwarts. The students are only allowed when their parent or guardian signs a permission form, but the teachers of the school can take away the privilege as punishment.

The students are allowed to bring either an owl, a toad, a rat or a cat.

Hogwarts has an Owlery at the top of the North Tower, where the students can keep their owls during the term. If they do not have owls, they are allowed to borrow the school owls for mail.

There are some special clubs that exist within the school that students can join, like study groups and a gobstone club.

It is not legal to use spells in the corridors and many items have been banned in the school, mostly by the caretaker Mr. Filch. Items such as Everbashing Boomerangs, Fanged Frisbees and Screaming yo-yo’s are prohibited. There is also a curfew that is different depending on what year you are in. Being out after curfew is a very serious offence and usually leads to a big loss of house points and detention. In detention you can do many things and it is the teacher who catches you that decides your punishment.

It is not permitted for students below the 6th year to go into the Restricted Section of the Library. To get a book they need a signed note from a teacher stating they have permission and it is for study purposes.

The Forbidden Forest is out of bounds to all students.

In the past, supposedly physical punishment was used where they hung the students by their thumbs in the dungeons, however this was discontinued in the 1900s.
